Ken’s nickname was “Tin Man” because he didn’t seem to have a heart. He was able to compartmentalize his emotions. He would focus on the moment and was able to move on seemingly without feeling. He remembers a call where two children burned to death while strapped in their car seats. Years later all of the horrific calls begin to “collect.” Alcohol becomes a huge intricate part in a fireperson’s culture. Ken was no exception! Alcohol provided a mask for what was hurting him deep within. Ken goes through a faith based recovery program. The program begins the healing process and Jesus mends all of his hurts and disappointments, so Ken no longer has to shoulder all the pain! Ken received an award and was named A Hero With A Heart.
